TRANSEXUAL INTERMEDIARIES, 2025

inkjet prints, tattoo stencil, fresh double mastectomy - 15 in x 20 in

“Sexual Intermediaries” is a term coined by Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, founder of the Berlin Institute of Sexual Research, to describe individuals who did not fit traditional and heteronormative categories.

Thought of as a continuation of “SEXUAL INTERMEDIARIES”, this triptych blends performance and documentation to tie historical archives to present queer realities. Each frame was taken in a location meaningful to Vancouver’s LGBTQ+ history, paired with a found transgender Canadian archives applied to my chest as tattoo stencils. The act of pressing history on my own skin and on location brings the archive to life. Wearing a typographic transgender legacy is not only a way for me to connect with queer elders and my own history, but also serves as an echo to others’ present experience of queer joy, resistance and advocacy.

Queer individuals deserve to know and live their own history. Queer bodies deserve to take space.
